Donor Mike Conley puts his money where his mouth is.

We are thrilled to see that Memphis Grizzlies point guard (and hometown favorite) Mike Conley was recently named one of 2018 “Top 40 Under 40” by Memphis Business Journal.

Mike Conley.jpg

In Mike’s Top 40 Under 40 feature in the latest MBJ issue, he cites that the one thing he would change about Memphis is “lowering the employment rates throughout the city.” We can speak first-hand to his commitment to make this change a reality. Mike has been a supporter of Memphis Suit Project for two years; in 2017 by the sponsorship of Mayor Jim Strickland’s Manhood University participants, and in 2018 by sponsoring both the Memphis Athletic Ministries cycle and the CodeSchool cycle, which will culminate at their Suiting Event this Wednesday at 10 am.

Without the support of Memphians like Mike Conley, who not only see the challenges unemployment creates, but also act to support solutions to those challenges, our City will continue to face an unemployment crisis. Memphis Suit Project is a solution that is making a significant impact on job-seekers securing and maintaining employment.

Mike Conley is an example to the students we serve. He uses his platform and resources to do more than lip service….he makes a difference. And we are all better for it.

Continued thanks to Mike and Tim Jordan, who both selflessly give for the betterment of others.

Good times in tech, per our partners at Vaco

via Inside Memphis Business

It would seem that 2018 is a great year to work in tech according to survey data collected by recruiting firm Vaco. But the very things that make the industry attractive to employees can make hiring difficult for companies. Survey findings say 83 percent of tech professionals reported feeling “optimistic” or “very optimistic” about the job market this year. Additionally, 74 percent say they are “satisfied” or ;“highly satisfied” in their current role, and half say they’re not likely to change jobs in 2018.

“The tech talent pool is generally content. That’s great, but it’s a double-edged sword for companies hiring, especially in areas with lots of competition for employees,” says Kirk Johnston, senior managing partner for Vaco Memphis. “Of course employers want their employees to be inspired and happy. But it’s difficult if you’re hiring from the relatively small pool of top talent interested in making a move. Other companies are pursuing your top talent, and your options are limited.”

Another contributing factor to the tight market is that companies are getting smarter about their retention programs: 82 percent of survey participants anticipate getting a raise this year with no significant change in their current role.

Recipient Kyron Martin throws out first pitch for MSP!

The August 10 Redbirds game against the Omaha Storm Chasers was a first for many of us. It was the first time for Memphis Suit Project to be featured as the Lipscomb & Pitts Nonprofit of the Game. It was also the first baseball game that Kyron Martin, a junior at Hamilton High School and a student recipient from Memphis Athletic Ministries, ever attended a baseball game.

And to keep with the trend of "firsts," Kyron was given the honor to throw out the first pitch of the game!

Kyron and 20 of his peers recently received a brand new suit, shirt, tie, belt, socks and shoes from Memphis Suit Project. Through MAM’s Career Readiness Program, Kyron is learning what it takes to be successful in the workplace and says that the suit the received from Memphis Suit Project gives him confidence and credibility as he interviews for employment. Memphis Suit Project is proud of Kyron and his efforts to improve his life through education and employment and is thrilled that he represented the organization so well!

MSP on The River

This week our Executive Director, Meghan Heimke, had the honor of talking to Mandy Morgan of WRVR 104.5 "The River" about Memphis Suit Project. She had the opportunity to brag on our recipients, explain our mission, honor our donors and encourage listeners to join our mission. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share our mission with the community through our colleagues and friends in the media.

The Apple Store at Saddle Creek Joins Our Mission

As part of our program, our recipients are asked to write a short essay or shoot a brief video (iPhone is ok) answering the question:

How will this suit help me in bettering my life and community?

To help them in this effort, our recipients are treated to a private workshop at the Apple Store at Saddle Creek to learn how to shoot and edit their Reflection video. Take a moment to watch just one example of a recipient that learned how to shoot and edit his video today and sent it to us with his sincere gratitude.

Our community partners are absolutely amazing and we are grateful to Apple for investing in our youth!

Here are just a few photos from our awesome morning together!

Suit Gifting: Introducing the Men (and Women) of Memphis Athletic Ministries

On Wednesday, May 10, we gifted 14 youth from Memphis Athletic Ministries' Career Readiness Program. The 2017 Class, made up of 7 young men and 7 young women were dressed to impress at the Gifting Event. Mentors, peers, donors and community partners excitedly cheered them on in support of their futures and promise.

We are thrilled to partner with organizations like MAM, who work with young men to teach job-readiness skills and soft skills to ensure they are successful in the workplace. Special thanks to Coach Kyle Bennison and Coach Jonathan Torres for making this such a special time for these students. Thank you to Paaton Karel Photography for the photos.

Finally, thank you to our donor partners, for recognizing the importance of a good first impression and for helping these students make theirs.

Memphis Office of Youth Services Implements ‘Just One Youth' program

Mayor Jim Strickland and the Memphis Office of Youth Services is asking the community to help provide jobs for youth this summer.

The office is launching a new program called JOY or ‘Just one Youth.'

Through the program, the Mayor is asking all churches and businesses in the city of Memphis to commit, employ and compensate one child of their choice this summer for six weeks starting June 5th through July 17th. Give just one child a life changing experience for the summer.  This “Call to Action” is named JOY, Just One Youth.  Together let’s bring JOY to a child while breaking the cycle of despair.

City asks businesses to try something new this summer

Tens of thousands of teens are employed in Dallas, Chicago and Washington, D.C. each summer, dwarfing the City of Memphis' efforts to employ 1,000 youth each June. The difference? Private sector involvement.

Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland campaigned on more partnerships between the city and the private sector, and the latest program from the Office of Youth Services is calling on investment by companies and churches.

Office of Youth Services Director Ike Griffith is launching a new program, Just One Youth or JOY, and asking each company and church in Memphis to commit, employ and compensate one teen for six weeks during the summer.

Registration for businesses and churches who want to participate in JOY begins April 5 and runs through May 31 to coincide with the start of the MPLOY program, beginning June 5.

Premier Sponsor: Crazy Cleanerz

Crazy Cleaners came upon such a unique name because many industry insiders didn’t think it was possible to offer couture type dry cleaning services at reasonable prices. Yet here we are, saving YOU up to 80%!

OUR PROMISE

Our promise is to provide High Quality Garment Care along with prompt, responsive customer service for the best price possible.  It is our goal to be thought of as the best everyday value our customers receive from any business.  We expect to build long lasting customer and employee relationships by satisfying both the expectations of our customers as well as our employees.

DRY CLEANING

We care for each garment as if it were our own. That is why we use state-of-the-art technology and special solutions to remove dirt and everyday odors from a variety of fabrics without affecting the color or causing undesirable shrinkage. Each article of clothing goes through a detailed process, beginning with inspection, stain-removal and cleaning, then final inspection and packaging. Whether it's your favorite cashmere sweater or that timeless black dress, we believe both deserve a dose of dry-cleaning so you can enjoy them for years to come.

Crazy Cleanerz is proud to say that all of our dry cleaning solutions are 100% distilled for purity before reuse. Factually stated, we can tell you that no other cleaners you have ever used in the mid south can honestly make that claim.

DR. DRY CLEAN/PICK UP AND DELIVERY

Today, in the next phase of Crazy Cleanerz, we are offering home pick up and delivery service for less than you can drive your garments to your current cleaners!  Many providers offer what they call a “FREE” pick up and delivery service, but rest assured it’s the most expensive “FREE” thing you may ever receive!  Known as Dr DryClean, the new pick up and delivery division of Crazy Cleanerz, we are now available to pick up your garments in selected areas.

Unlike some pick up and delivery providers, your clothes are never processed by wholesale cleaners.  Your garments will always be in our care! With over 45 years of industry experience nobody does it better than us. Let us simplify your clothing care tasks and give you back your time and money that you are currently losing elsewhere.
